1 in custody, 1 sought in in a single day housebreaking – Every day Chief

One person is in custody and another is wanted by law enforcement agencies after a series of crimes committed Thursday evening through Friday morning.

The two men assaulted a woman at gunpoint in Jackson and stole her vehicle. The couple then traveled to Brookhaven, where they broke the glass frontage of Southern Pawn on North Whitworth Avenue with a brick.

The store’s staff said nothing of real value was taken.

Brookhaven police chief Kenneth Collins said the duo then traveled to Hazlehurst and opened a store there. Hazlehurst PD officers followed up the suspects who fired at the officers.

The mother of one of the suspects left her son at the Hazlehurst police station on Friday afternoon, Collins said.

“We had a mother who cared enough about the law and right and wrong to take her son and give him up,” said Collins. “I am so proud that we had a mother who was brave enough to do the right thing and give up her child. I want to thank her. She doesn’t know how many lives she saved in the process. “

BPD Det. Captain Clint Earls met with HPD detectives on Friday afternoon after the suspect was handed over.

The other suspect is still wanted by law enforcement and should be viewed as armed and dangerous, Collins said. None of the suspects have been named by the police as the investigation is ongoing.

The Brookhaven chief thanked the mother and the Hazlehurst and Crystal Springs Police Department for their cooperation in the investigation.

“If we don’t work together, we can’t protect our cities and towns,” he said.
