1 suspect injured, one other in custody after officer-involved taking pictures in Connecticut

ANSONIA, Conn. (WTNH) – Police are investigating a shooting involving an officer in Ansonia on Monday morning.

Police said there was a shooting with a Derby officer on Division Street between Atwater Avenue and Pershing Drive in Ansonia around 7 a.m.

A Derby police officer and two teenagers were involved in the incident.

I’ve spoken to neighbors in the area. Although filming took place early Monday morning, the scene remains active five minutes later.

We spoke to a man who said he heard gunshots followed by other gunshots.

Neighbor Eric Barone said he watched everything go on outside his window. He said he yelled at the teenagers not to move and one of them yelled, “Don’t shoot. He is a child, I am a child. Don’t shoot me. ‘And the cop said, “I’m not going to shoot you, don’t move.”

One of the teenagers reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the lower leg. He was taken to a district hospital. The other teenager was handcuffed and taken into custody.

We spoke to the detained boy Candice Chavers’ mother. She said her son is 16 years old and she is still waiting for an explanation from the police about how it all started.

Chavers says her nephew, who is 29 years old, was the person who was shot in the incident and he is now in stable condition in the hospital. She says he didn’t have a gun with him.

We have not yet received confirmation from the police about these details.

According to police, the incident was contained in the immediate area and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

WDMCS detectives are sent to the city of Ansonia to help investigate an OIS. No further information is currently available. Updates will be provided as soon as they are available.
