The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that a baby had been removed from its mother’s care after being hospitalized with a burn injury.

The injury allegedly occurred in a house in Milton.

On Saturday, an 18-month-old child was rushed to a local hospital for treatment for a burn injury and was then rushed to a hospital in Mobile, Alabama, according to a SRSO news release.

“The Alabama authorities have taken custody of the child because it was determined that the child’s injury was inconsistent with the child’s mother’s statement,” the news release said.

The authorities did not publish the mother’s name and it was not immediately clear whether the case would be charged.

The SRSO opened an investigation into the incident after being made aware of the situation by the Ministry of Children and Families.

The investigation is ongoing and the authorities have announced that they will update the public as soon as more information becomes available on the matter.
