Child killed in Warren after being hit by a car late Tuesday night
A young boy was riding his bike near Van Dyke and Stephens around 10 p.m. Tuesday when he was hit and killed by an unknown driver. This person is now on remand after escaping the scene.
WARREN, me. – In Warren, a pedestrian was killed Tuesday night after being hit by a car.
Police say the boy was crossing the street near Van Dyke and Stephens on the Warren-Center Line border when he was hit.
The officers were dispatched to the area at around 9.43 p.m. after a child was reportedly struck with an adult relative and other friends and was a few blocks away on the way back to his home when he was hit.
The suspicious driver who allegedly hit the boy fled the scene, according to Warren police. A release sent later on Wednesday confirmed that a black Jeep Trailhawk had sped to hit a red light when it hit the kid. They fled north on Van Dyke.
The suspect was later taken into custody after police found the vehicle in a Taco Bell near 16 Mile and Van Dyke. It had new front damage that was “in line with a recent accident”.
Police questioned the suspect, identified as a 22-year-old Detroit resident, who admitted being involved in an accident and “hit something,” the statement said.
The jeep was confiscated and a search warrant applied for. The detectives also issued a search warrant to investigate the presence of drugs or alcohol. The investigation continues.
The child was taken to a local hospital after the accident, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
This is an ongoing and active investigation. The detectives plan to submit their findings to the Macomb County Attorney’s Office for review on July 1st.
