Police responded to the scene on South Lowell Boulevard and Morrison Road at around 6:35 p.m. Thursday. Investigators said the driver identified as Jordan Montiel-Vazquez escaped from the scene but was later detained at a house in Aurora.

On Friday, the ward gathered to remember the little boy they named Sage.

“Just a kid full of life brought a lot of joy and charisma and things like that to the room he was in. He was a kid who stole the show,” said family friend Carl Martinez.

Martinez was with the family when they returned to the intersection where the crash took place. He says they are relieved to know that the person in charge is not on the street.

“He has his demons to deal with now. He took the life of an innocent child,” he said.

Right now, he says, they focus their energies on honoring and remembering sage.

“He touched many lives and this is evidence of that,” said Martinez.

Dozens of people stood out in the cold to show their support for the family: “I’ve known them since they had a child the day he was born, he was a blessing.”

They hope that the candles, flowers and toys left behind will not only serve as a memorial but also convey a message to everyone about a problem that affects the entire city.

“This is the result of a subpoena to irresponsible driving. This is not just a family problem. This is a community problem. A city problem,” said Martinez. There are people who cross this city and are not always in the car. “

The family says the loss will be devastating for them if they are already struggling to make ends meet.

A GoFundMe page was set up to raise family support. Martinez says if you are unable to donate, you will receive prayers too.

“He was such an inspiring boy full of joy and happiness, who had a whole life ahead of him that didn’t deserve it. He was a wonderful 3 year old and a key family member. We’re so devastated by this incident and struggling to make ends meet that we ask for help if we can get help, ”the family explained on GoFundMe -Page.
