Baby custody trade at Bessemer park results in shootout; 1 man killed, one other critically injured

A child custody exchange at a Bessemer park Sunday afternoon ended in gunfire, leaving one person dead and another critically wounded.

The shooting happened at 1:10 pm at McNeil Park in Bessemer’s Pipe Shop community.

Lt. Christian Clemons said a mother and her new boyfriend were meeting the children’s father and the father’s brother to swap custody when an argument broke out.

The children are ages 2 and 5. They were not injured.

The mother’s boyfriend, the children’s father, and the father’s brother all fired shots, Clemons said.

The children’s father and the mother’s new boyfriend were wounded. They were taken to UAB in Birmingham.

The mother’s boyfriend was pronounced dead at the hospital. The children’s father is in critical condition.

The father’s brother is in custody.

No identities are yet being released.

The slaying is Bessemer’s 11th homicide of the year, and the 143 in all of Jefferson County.
