A lawyer representing the mother of a boy who died in a suicide this week in San Francisco identified the victim as 9-year-old Pierce O’Loughlin.

The boy’s father had been identified as Stephen O’Loughlin, 49. The couple divorced in 2016, according to Lorie Nachlis, attorney for the boy’s mother, Lesley Hu.

The lawyer said the couple were embroiled in an ongoing custody battle and an argument over their son’s care.

“I believe this issue involves both mental illness and domestic violence,” Nachlis said in a statement released Friday. “When father saw that he was losing control, he punished Lesley with the ultimate act of violence: killing your child. She will suffer as intended for the rest of her life.”

One detail that emerged from early reports of the incident said the boy’s father did not want his son to be given any vaccinations against the mother’s wishes.

However, the mother’s lawyer expressed concern that the tragedy would be falsely vaccines. She claimed the boy’s father “suffered from an untreated mental illness”.

The boy and his father were found dead Wednesday afternoon at their home on Scott Street in the Marina District.
