KALAMAZOO, me. (WOOD) – A 12-year-old boy from Michigan is fighting for his life after another kid shot him in the head with a BB.

The Devon Free family say he was beaten while playing outside with other boys late Monday afternoon. Lisa Shirley, a relative, says her great nephew is on life support at Bronson Children’s Hospital and was in critical condition Tuesday afternoon.

“He may or never walk, speak, or come off the ventilator,” said Shirley.

She said Dven’s mother rushed to help after being hit by the BB.

“Devon was down and could still speak at this point. She couldn’t lift him off the floor so she let one of the boys go up and get her brother who lives with her,” said Shirley.

He stopped responding and was intubated in the Ascension Borgess emergency room, where doctors then performed a CT scan.

Shirley says the BB hit Deven above his right eye and got stuck in the back of his head. He was taken to Bronson Children’s Hospital for specialized care.

“You can’t do surgery at this point because the BB is in there and the next 72 hours are very critical,” said Shirley.

The family opened a GoFundMe account to cover Deven’s medical care and were grateful for the support.

“Our phones are always going off from people around the world. We have a family in Kentucky; We have people from Kentucky telling us that they are praying for us, ”Shirley said.

The community is hoping and trying to stay optimistic after the latest update from Deven’s mom.

“She said his blood pressure and heart rate will be constant, so we’ll just keep praying,” said Shirley.

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office says the BB gun firing appears to be accidental.
