MIDDLETOWN – A couple were in custody Tuesday night after a 4-year-old boy was brought to safety for him shortly after an Amber Alert was issued, police said.
The Middletown child, Armel Muhammed, was found safe in a motel on 5th Avenue in Wethersfield, police said.
Middletown police said the child’s uncle Mario Jenkins had been entrusted with his care. When Jenkins went to work, the child was “in the care” of Stephanie Fonda, a friend of the family, the police said.
Fonda, 39, had taken Jenkins’ car “without his permission”, according to police. Police said she was last seen in a 2010 Chevy Malibu and reportedly dated her husband, 37-year-old David Fonda.
Police said David and Stephanie Fonda were in custody Tuesday night and New Britain police are expected to bring charges.
According to the police, the child was last seen in New Britain on Monday around 9 p.m. Middletown police were notified Tuesday around 3:20 p.m. that the child was missing, a press release said.
Amber Alerts are typically issued when law enforcement believes a child has been abducted and there is imminent danger, according to the Justice Department.
Before the child was found, Middletown police spokesman Lt. Brian Hubbs, he did not know of any specific danger to the child. In a press update streamed from NBC Connecticut, police said the boy was being rushed to hospital “as a safety precaution to make sure the child is safe.”
