RICHMOND, Virginia (WTVR) – A Virginia man took extreme measures to show he was not happy about the child support payment.
The last payment he made was 80,000 pfennigs in front of his daughter’s house. Avery Sanford, 18, took those pennies and turned his anger into a positive act for families in need.
What looked like a landscaping trailer dropped a pile of pennies in front of a mailbox last month.
“When I was in the middle of class, my father came over. He had rented a trailer, ”Sanford said on Tuesday.
The high school graduate will spend the summer at home before venturing into Virginia Tech for her freshman year.
“He stopped in front of our house as if he had turned the trailer on so he could throw out all the pennies on the street in front of our house,” she said. “And my mother went outside while it was happening. At first she did not recognize them. And she asked, ‘What are you pouring on my lawn?’ And he said, ‘This is your last child support.’ And then she realized who it was. “
She had to use a snow shovel in the summer to catch the domestic drama.
“It’s not just her (my mother) that he would embarrass,” Sanford said. “It’s me too, it’s my sister too. And it’s annoying that he doesn’t really think about it before doing this. “
When the pennies were collected, Sanford and her mother decided to turn the script over.
They donated his last child support – every penny – to Safe Harbor, a domestic violence shelter.
“Going around and donating this money to needy mothers and children, as I feel, makes the situation really positive,” said Sanford. “You can learn a lesson from this.”
Sanford said she hadn’t spoken to her father in years.
She says the incident shows she made the tough but right decision to stay clear and has no interest in being in a relationship with someone who doesn’t respect her mother.
“It is really hurtful and harmful to your children when you do something like this,” said the daughter. “And it doesn’t matter how old your children are – it doesn’t matter if they’re a young child or an adult. Your parents’ actions will always have some effect on you. “
Her mother filed a complaint with the Henrico County Police Department.
Her father spoke in a telephone interview and said 18 years of frustration had been built up. His emotions overwhelmed him and the last thing he wanted to do was put another wedge between him and his daughter.
