Divorce Overload – How To Deal With It

Divorce is one of the most stressful and emotionally overwhelming events of your life. It doesn’t matter whether you or your spouse are initiating a divorce. Your whole world can be turned upside down, causing the most painful and disturbing emotions you have ever experienced.

Our lives are disrupted, our routines and responsibilities change, and we are entering an often unfamiliar territory. Relationships with extended families and friends can be affected, and it can be a very lonely time in your life. Recovery can be difficult and take more time than you might think.

But it is important to remember that you can and will get through this, and that you can get through this with a sense of resilience and empowerment, knowing that you can create a future life that you will love!

Here are three tips to help you deal with the emotional tsunami that you are feeling right now:

1. Give yourself space to feel and function

Give yourself some space to feel and function below average now. You may not be able to do what you did before starting this process. Often times, the process can take a lot of energy. It is a time when you may have to regroup yourself, and everyone does so at their own pace. Grief and loss are not linear and you will experience ups and downs and it can be very destabilizing.

2. Don’t fight your feelings

It is normal to experience conflicting emotions such as anger, fear, resentment, and confusion, and to deal with the sadness of all the losses that you are experiencing. It is a good time to start diary to deal healthily with all of these emotions. Self-care is crucial – treat yourself to a cold – rest, exercise, enjoy a hot bath, read a favorite book and minimize the stress in your life.

3. Don’t do this alone

Reach trusted friends and family members who will support you, energize you, and not judge or criticize you. Get outside help when you need it. If reaching out to others is a challenge for you, consider joining a support group or a divorce coach. You will benefit greatly from having a certified divorce coach who can help you navigate this process. Divorce can be a very isolating experience and it can be difficult to do on your own.
