Driver in custody after mom, baby struck in Venice

A driver is in custody on Friday after beating his mother and child in Venice and then trying to flee the scene.

The officers were called to the intersection of Speedway and Galleon Streets just before 8:45 a.m.

Investigators believe the driver hit the two victims and then rammed them into a pole while attempting to escape, said Los Angeles police officer Jader Chaves.

A picture from the crime scene showed a black sedan with damage to the passenger side after it collided with a mast.

The mother and child did not appear to have been seriously injured in the accident, but police said they were taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

The unknown suspect was arrested, Chaves said.

Investigators are investigating whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the accident.

The intersection was closed during the investigation, but has now reopened, the police said.
