Financial institution rejects counterfeit county clerk checks circulating in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Someone tried to cash three counterfeit checks from the Tippecanoe County Clerk’s office this week, but the bank declined to cash the checks, according to Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office.

The checks appear to be drawn on the clerk’s child support accounts from the clerk’s office, according to police.

The first check appeared on Tuesday, and the bank put a hold on cashing it, according to the sheriff’s office. Then two checks showed up on Wednesday, and the bank did not honor the checks, according to the sheriff’s office. All totaled, the three checks were less than $2,500.

The checks are not from the clerk’s office, but someone created the checks to appear as if they were legitimate, according to the sheriff’s office, which is investigating the counterfeit.
