Pelosi’s 86th Anniversary Statement for Social Security

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a statement to the 86th anniversary of the introduction of social securitywhich was enacted on August 14, 1935 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt:

“86 years ago, both parties came together to make a sacred promise: that every American deserves to retire in dignity and security after a life of work. Forged in the depths of the Great Depression, this fundamental guarantee is a pillar of economic security that provides peace of mind to millions of hardworking Americans retired, with a disability, or after the loss of a loved one.

“As our nation emerges from the pandemic, Democrats remain determined, as always, to defend transformative social security advancement from callous, ruthless partisan attacks – and to strengthen the economic security of American families. That’s why we’re fighting to implement our Build Back Better agenda, which will create more jobs, bigger tax cuts and lower health care costs for working families. The top priority is the expansion of the Biden Child Tax Credit, a life-changing family win that the Democrats secured in the US bailout and that I often describe as “Child Social Security.”

“As Congress pushes infrastructure and reconciliation legislation, the House of Representatives remains committed to realizing President Biden’s vision as a whole, including key initiatives that will help us towards a cleaner, stronger and more just future for all to back up. Today, every day, let us renew our vows not only to protect social security for every generation, but to strengthen economic security for every family for decades to come. “
