Villupuram, TN, Aug. 30 (PTI): A woman arrested for allegedly torturing her two-year-old son has no mental illness and is on pre-trial detention for 14 days, police said Monday.

The woman (22) was arrested on Sunday in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh and brought here to a hospital on suspicion of a mental disorder, the police said.

“Doctors examined her and said she had no mental health problems. She was later brought before a court and held in custody until September 13,” a police officer told PTI.

Police said the woman was arrested following a complaint from her husband after video clips surfaced on social media of the woman beating her child and causing outrage.

Residents of a village near Gingee in the district said the couple had often argued. They have two sons, ages 2 and 4, residents said.

A relative appeared to have shared the videos showing the child being beaten by his mother.

The videos were recorded by the mother herself.

Why the woman behaved this way is unclear. An FIR was registered against them, citing sections of the IPC and the Juvenile Justice Act, police said. PTI VGN
