GIVE! 2020: Protected Households for Youngsters – Pikes Peak Area

COLORADO SPRINGS – For many, 2020 was a year full of challenges, but for Monique and her family it was a year full of challenges and losses.

“I lost pretty much everything, at home, in the car, so it was hard to think about surviving,” said Monique.

Monique became pregnant in late 2019; Her pregnancy was not easy and resulted in multiple trips to the hospital forcing her from work. However, she had help from Safe Families for Children, a nonprofit that is committed to helping families like Monique through difficult times.

“We work with parents who may be affected by homelessness, domestic violence, drug use and mental health, and we are just trying to surround them with support and care and help them be the best parents they can be” said Jillian Stephenson Safe Families for Children.

Most of their support is on a voluntary basis, which means the volunteers from Safe Families help families like Monique with transportation, mentoring, meals, or just an extra hand.

“A lot of us have families and friends we can call and for so many families they don’t have that support,” added Stephenson.

Through her voluntary imitation, the nonprofit brings Grace to life in Monique. Grace has been helping look after Monique’s family for the past few months, including her newborn son Ivan.

“She helped me bring food to my house and watched Ivan,” Monique said. “She has become part of our family.”

Give with Indy! You say your donation will continue to help families in crisis.

“Your donation will create stability for families and help them stay together and healthy during this time,” said Stephenson.
