Investigation into 4th of July demise of Memphis 7-year-old brings two into custody

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (WMC) – The Memphis Police Department issued an arrest warrant for 20-year-old Angieline Kennedy.

This is the third person of interest named in the investigation into the death of 7-year-old Kelby Shorty.

She faces charges of first degree murder and two cases of attempted first degree murder.

Two more were arrested, which provided much-needed relief to Kelby Shorty’s family.

Officials arrested nineteen-year-old Jordan Pittman and arrested twenty-six-year-old Adoniss Wright on Friday.

US marshals found Pittman, who was already a person of interest, hiding under a bed in a house on Parkhurst Court.

Wright was at the Parkhurst house, lying to the marshals that Pittman was not inside and had a gun.

Both are charged with first degree murder, Wright with Accessory after the fact.

What community leaders praise is the speed of the arrests, as bullet holes are still circled at 736 North Montgomery Street, where Shorty was killed.

“It makes me feel good to get out of here and see they got her so quickly,” said Stevie Moore, founder and president of Freedom From Unnecessary Negatives (FFUN).

Moore believes it was the tragic death of a child that pushed the neighborhood to take action to bring those responsible to justice.

“Somebody called the police this time,” said Moore. “They came out and said, ‘No. We will check it. We’ll put up signs. We will do anything. ‘”

When we interviewed him, next to Moore was Kelby Shorty’s mother, Andrea Willis.

She chose not to speak on camera but later said she was doing the best she can and that although the news was being brought to justice by those responsible for her son’s death, her son would not be returned.

“Seven years old did nothing but stand right there and shoot fireworks,” said Moore. “How on earth can we be comfortable with things like this happening in our neighborhoods?”

Moore said this neighborhood could lead by example and encourage other neighborhoods of Memphis to speak out against violence and help make the city a place to live, at least for their children.

Anyone with information on Kennedy’s whereabouts is asked to call Memphis CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH (2274).

Moore and FFUN also have an anonymous tip hotline at (901) 417-7361.
