Just weeks before Bill and Melinda Gates announced their divorce, the foundation sold hundreds of millions of dollars in shares of Apple and Twitter using their names.
Barron’s first filing with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Securities and Exchange Commission shows that the trust of the foundation sold all of its stake in Apple and Twitter earlier this year.
By March 30, the Foundation Trust had liquidated all of its shares in Apple and Twitter – valued at hundreds of millions of dollars.
Since the divorce was announced in early May, approximately $ 4 billion worth of shares have been transferred from Bill to Melinda. Bill Gates is one of the richest people in the world with a net worth of around $ 146 billion.

Reportedly, Bill and Melinda do not have a marriage agreement and instead rely on a “separation agreement” to share assets. Unlike a marriage agreement, which is a contractual arrangement in the event of a divorce, a separation agreement is less formal – it’s a legal agreement that sets out the rights and obligations of each party, such as child support and custody which no court is involved.
In their filing for divorce, the Gateses said their marriage was “irretrievably broken” and demanded that their property be divided according to the separation agreement.
