Invoice would impression drivers’ license suspensions for delinquent youngster help | WDVM25 & DCW50

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WDVM) – Maryland law allows a parent who fails to pay child support to have their driver’s license suspended.

Some members of the General Assembly say the law does more harm than good, as one parent often requires transportation to their place of work. Public transport is not always the answer, and a vehicle is required to commute to work, especially in low-income communities where job opportunities can be limited.

Delegate Debra Davis (D – Charles County) sponsored a bill to end the license suspension. She advocates the addition of wages, but if the parents have little or no income, this is not the solution either. She finds that nearly 15,000 motorists in Maryland have suspended their licenses for failing to comply with child support regulations.

“I hope we can find a way to address this problem,” said Davis. “In the meantime, communities need to band together so families can care for their children.”

The problem is pronounced in color communities. 31% of the Maryland population is 31% black, but 71% of license suspensions affect black drivers.
