SEDGWICK COUNTY – Law enforcement officers are investigating an accidental shootout involving a three-year-old girl and her father in an apartment building on the 2300 block of East Macarthur, Wichita, according to Wichita Police Chief Jason Stephens.

A little after 7 p.m. Police went home on Wednesday and found a 30-year-old man who woke up in bed with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg. The girl had injured her hand, according to Stephens.

The police are still working to find out how and where the man kept the gun and how the child got it. According to Stephens, he was the only adult in the house at the time of the incident.

The three other children in the home were taken into protective custody pending the investigation. Stephens had no details on whether the child was still in the hospital.

In the event of negligence, the police will report this to the Sedgwick District Attorney.
