In the season finale of Love After Lockup, viewers could watch Rachel and Doug’s marriage implode after Rachel found out Doug was cheating on them. Doug jumped on a motorcycle with his buddy and drove back to Kalamazoo, where he was later arrested and charged with eight crimes.
Rachel and Doug’s cloud seemed a little too dark for a silver lining, but Love After Lockup fans got just that during the credits of the finale episode. WE tv provided updates on the couple and they revealed that Doug’s son Dougie lives with Rachel!
Rachel shared the same photo with Dougie on her Instagram feed, adding the caption, “When a relationship between two people ends, it never ends with a child. Great things have turned out of my mistakes. ”She added a bunch of hash tags that included #onceastepparentalwaysastepparent, #lifegoeson, and #liveandlearn. The post ended with the 🙏❤️ emoji.
Rachel has custody of Dougie
Not only was Dougie with Rachel at the time of the finale, but it looks like he’ll be with her for a long time, as Rachel allegedly got full custody of him. Sarah at Realiteasquad shared a YouTube video (see below) Tuesday with additional details on Dougie’s custody situation from a “source close to Rachel”.
Sarah reports that Doug took his son with him when he left Rachel last year. They reportedly moved in with Brittany, the young lady who came out as Doug’s new old friend in July. “I’ve got confirmation that Doug actually lived with him,” Sarah says of Brittany. She confirms that the woman Rachel found out that Doug cheated on during the finale is Brittany.
Sarah shared additional information about Dougie’s life situation – and it’s as bizarre as it is repulsive:
[Dougie] lived with Doug and this new woman, Brittany, and actually her entire family. I was told – and this was a source close to Rachel – that Doug actually brought him and Dougie to Brittany and her husband and children.
When we heard that Brittany was married, I just assumed that… they were still legally married, but they were probably separated, or they just hadn’t filed papers or anything. But it turns out that this woman is very married and very much related to her rightful husband and also having an affair with [Doug]She moved it in and then moved on to other appointments.
Wait what ?! Doug really doesn’t seem like a brother-husband type? More from Sarah:
… There has been a lot of speculation on the internet as to whether Rachel has custody of Dougie or whether it is more of an informal custody arrangement. So I got in touch and … I was told that an agent called Rachel when SWAT arrived – so about … a week or two ago when this raid took place and it was all over the news and all social media. At that point, Rachel was contacted to get Dougie if she was interested, and of course she was interested.
Sarah says there were “several children” in the house who were “alone and all had head lice” when Rachel came to get Dougie.
“Rachel has custody of little Dougie now,” Sarah assures us. “It is a court-appointed custody agreement.”

Rachel and Doug are officially divorced
It’s been a crazy month for Rachel! According to court records, it was exactly a week after Doug was arrested and charged with eight charges that Rachel and Doug were divorced!
As we first reported, Rachel filed for divorce from Doug on November 9th last year. However, this request was rejected in March. Rachel filed for divorce again on June 8. According to court records, the judge signed the divorce default judgment on August 19.
I just can’t imagine what a turbulent week this was for Rachel! Doug is arrested as part of a major sting operation and she is contacted to pick up Dougie. I’m assuming Rachel can get custody of Dougie during this time. Then, on August 19th, she will divorce Doug.
Did Rachel delay the divorce to gain custody of Dougie?
I rummaged through the court records again and saw that there was a case regarding Dougie’s guardianship that dates back to 2009. The files indicate that Doug’s sister Ashley became Dougie’s official guardian in May 2014. There were numerous entries in the case that looked like cyclical reports and address changes until last year.
An example of the atypical submissions from last year is a hearing for a show in August 2020. From Divorcenet.com:
An evidence hearing is scheduled when a spouse (or parent) involved in family or family law proceedings files legal documents and asks the court to grant certain discharge. These hearings can relate to many types of family court orders, including enforcement of custody and visiting, property and maintenance orders.
There was a guardianship review that resulted in the termination of Ashley’s guardianship on August 2nd of that year. Dougie’s custody case was then closed.
This is pure speculation, but I suspect Rachel filed for divorce shortly after learning about Doug’s cheating and giving him the chance. However, she later found out that Dougie’s custody battle would last longer than the divorce, so she had that initial filing dismissed.
Rachel later resubmitted when it looked like the custody battle would resolve before the divorce was finalized. As Doug’s wife and Dougie’s legal stepmother, Rachel would have a solid legal base from which to seek custody – especially given Doug’s extensive criminal history. Once the two were divorced, there would be little chance she could get Dougie into custody. Let me repeat that this is all speculation.
Regardless of how it all turned out, Rachel has apparently achieved the impossible by actually turning her relationship with Doug into something very positive – custody of Dougie. Now she is able to experience a very different post-lockup love scenario than Dougie’s legal mother. We wish both of them all the best and look forward to numerous positive updates over the next few years!
In the meantime, we will almost certainly be providing numerous non-positive updates on Doug. It seems he will be in jail for a long, long time.
