AUGUSTA, Maine – At a joint Maine House-Senate meeting on Wednesday, Democrat Aaron Frey was re-elected as Maine’s 58th Attorney General for a second two-year term. He was nominated by Senator Donna Bailey, D-Saco, and Rep. Teresa Pierce, D-Falmouth.
In a statement, Frey said he was “honored that the legislature has put their trust in me to continue serving as Maine attorney general”.
“It has been a privilege to work with the attorneys and attorney general staff who work tirelessly for the people of our state to ensure Maine has the highest level of legal representation,” Frey said.
“As the attorney general, I am sworn to defend the constitution and to ensure that the rule of law is protected,” Frey continued.
Bangor’s Frey has been a vocal advocate of electoral integrity in recent months as the country faced a crucial electoral cycle amid the pandemic. Frey had joined attorneys general across the country in calling for changes to the US postal service to be halted before the elections and, more recently, urged AG William Barr to reverse policies that “undermine public confidence in the elections would”.

Frey said: “I will continue to work with lawmakers and the Mills administration to ensure our state does everything in its power to fight the pandemic, fight the opioid crisis, and gain accountability for opioid manufacturers and itself to participate productively in the process. ” Create substantial reforms in the state’s relations with the tribal nations of Maine and find meaningful ways to make our criminal justice system fairer. “
Prior to being elected the 58th Maine Attorney General in 2018, Frey worked for a private Bangor law firm specializing in criminal defense and family law. From 2012 to 2018, he represented part of Bangor and part of Orono for three terms in the Maine House of Representatives. In the legislature he was a member of the Committee on Resources and Finances of the legislature.
The attorney general is Maine’s chief law enforcement officer and represents the state on legal matters ranging from child support enforcement to civil rights and consumer protection to prosecuting murders, crime cases, and gross fraud. The attorney general is also a member of the Baxter Park Authority and oversees the 209,000 acres of wilderness in Baxter State Park.
Frey will be sworn in for his second term in early January.
