LENOIR, NC (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) – One man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and another man was charged after a shooting outside the Caldwell County Courthouse in Lenoir Monday morning, Lenoir police said.

The shooting took place in front of the courthouse at Main Street 216 NW on Monday, July 12th at 10:49 am.

Lenoir police said when officers arrived at the scene, they found Travis Lee Webb, 35, of Lenoir, who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. He was taken to Caldwell UNC Healthcare and later taken to the Carolinas Medical Center Main in Charlotte with serious injuries, police said.

According to local authorities, a suspect identified as Chad James Emke, 48, from Taylorsville was quickly taken into custody. Emke was questioned by detectives and then charged with assault with a fatal weapon that had inflicted serious injuries and endangered children.

Lenoir police said Emke was in a vehicle with a 10-year-old boy outside the courthouse on Monday when Webb at one point approached Emke’s vehicle and the two started arguing.

Police said during the dispute that Emke pulled out a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and shot Webb twice in the upper body. Law enforcement began helping Webb before Medic arrived.

Lenoir police said Emke had a scheduled trial Monday at the Caldwell County Courthouse on custody issues. Both Emke and Webb know each other and it should be an isolated case, the police said.

The 10-year-old boy was not injured in the shooting, the police said. The current state of Webb is currently unknown, Lenoir police said on Monday afternoon.
