Man in custody after Amber Alert scenario resolved

(ST. JOSEPH, Mon.) – A man is in custody after kidnapping a two-year-old girl from St. Joseph.

Buchanan County’s Sheriff’s Department says Jeremiah Latour, 29, took Miah Latour out of the girl’s home on Promenade Lane in Lake Contrary after an argument with the girl’s mother, who became physical. Jeremiah Latour did not live in this residence.

Latour, who claims to be the girl’s father, reportedly left the house in a vehicle with a woman who had driven Latour into the residence.

An Amber Alert was a problem for the girl Latour, the driver and the vehicle in which they had left.

The sheriff’s MPs found the vehicle within an hour, but it was empty.

Soon after, however, Latour had safely dropped the child off at the law enforcement center.

“The subject brought the kid here and surrendered,” said Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett. “He knew we were looking and we were in some places and obviously wanted the best for the child. He surrendered.”

Puett also praised the effectiveness of the Amber Alert system.

He says once it was issued his office immediately received tips that he said helped them with their investigation.

Puett said the woman with Latour had been released. He said the investigation into the incident was ongoing.
