Man in custody after barricading himself and a baby in Toledo condo

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A man is in custody after he barricaded himself and another inside a Toledo apartment Friday morning, according to Toledo Police.

It happened around 12 am at Maplecreek Apartments located on the 5500 block of Lewis Ave.

Officials say they received a call from a 10-year-old child that a man, Darrick Hayes, 51, was allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, the child’s mother, and waving a gun around.

According to TPD, Hayes threatened his girlfriend with the weapon during an argument then pushed her outside and locked the door, leaving himself and the 10-year-old inside.

Police say they treated it as a hostage situation and started negotiations with Hayes, via phone, which lasted for several hours. Police were able to get the child and Hayes to come out of the apartment and Hayes was taken into custody.

According to officials, no injuries were reported.

Toledo Police, SWAT and Toledo Fire and Rescue were all on the scene and the situation was cleared up just before 4:30 am
