Man in custody in dying of 1 boy, wounding of 2nd: Philadelphia police

PHILADELPHIA – A man was arrested in the shooting that killed an 11-year-old boy and wounded another boy while riding a scooter on a Philadelphia street last week, police said Wednesday evening.

Police announced the arrest hours after it became known that an arrest warrant was issued against 19-year-old Khaleek Cooper-Baldwin on the Friday of the 11-year-old Harley Belance’s death.

The defendant was wanted for murder, violating gun laws, and related crimes, police said, adding that a $ 20,000 reward was given for information leading to an arrest and conviction. It is unclear whether the defendant has a lawyer; A number listed in his name could not be found on Wednesday.

Belance was hit in the neck around 6:30 p.m. Friday while driving in the Oxford Circle neighborhood of northeast Philadelphia. The younger boy was pronounced dead minutes later at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. The older child was shot in the arm and ankle and was in stable condition.

Police previously said a man was seen firing from the steps of a house in the previous block and it was uncertain at the time if the boys were the intended target. Four fired cartridge cases were recovered from this block.
