Man needed in AF AMBER Alert now in police custody

AMERICAN FORK, Utah — A 29-year-old man who was shot at by police and eluded law enforcement for several days, has now been booked into the Utah County Jail.

American Fork Police Department said Friday afternoon that it had apprehended Danny Sihalath, who was treated at a hospital for injuries he received during a confrontation with police in a Walmart parking lot.

Police said he was originally wanted on a theft charge on Aug. 9, but Sihalath observed police outside a store fled in a passenger car with a 5-year-old boy in the back seat. An officer fired at the car as Sihalath attempted to evade police. Police had ordered a woman out of the car who was knocked down as Sihalath tried to get away from police.

Police issued an AMBER Alert to help locate the child but Sihalath took him to a relative’s home in West Valley City, Utah, left him there unharmed and abandoned the car.

Sihalath was pursued by police after he drove away from Walmart, but each time the police chase was terminated. Blood was found in the abandoned car and police said it was believed Sihalath was injured.

Friday, Sihalath was arrested and booked on suspicion of:

  • Retail theft
  • Failure to stop at the command of an officer
  • Three counts of reckless endangerment
  • Aggravated assault
  • Evading

“We appreciate the help of our community and media in the search for Mr. Sihalath,” AFPD said in a press release. “We also appreciate the assistance of so many surrounding police agencies, especially the Utah County Sheriff’s Office and the West Valley Police Department.”
