Mom of man who died in custody needs solutions

The mother of a man who died in the care of the Rankin County’s deputy sheriff talks about her side of what happened that night. “Why? Why? Why? Why? Why my child?” said Monica Lee in an interview with 16 WAPT News. Lee wants answers after her son Damien Cameron dies late Monday. MPs received a phone call about a break-in and vandalism, according to a press release from the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office. When they arrived, Damien was identified as a suspect. The release states that when a deputy approached him, he began to fight and resist the arrest. They were finally able to put him in custody and in a patrol car. “I think they’re putting my son in jail so I’m going outside to say goodbye to my son, that I love him and I’ll be up there tomorrow his truck got my son put on the ground and didn’t respond,” said Lee. “From the bedroom outside: ‘I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I’m tired.’ I asked the officer, ‘Can I give him some water? No!’ “She said Damien was taken to Simpson General Hospital and then transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he died. Lee said that her son’s last picture is of him in a hospital bed is incredible. “I don’t understand why it got to this point. It shouldn’t have happened. Now my son is gone and he’s never coming home,” Lee said. This grieving mother said she wasn’t the only one who burst into tears over what happened. “And seeing that cop literally cry. He knows he screwed it up. He cried,” Lee said. Lee said she just wanted to know why. “It’s not right, it’s not right, it’s not right. Something has to be done in my heart. Justice has to be brought because it’s not right,” said Lee. WAPT News had several questions for the sheriff’s department, such as: Is there any dash cam or body cam video of what happened that night? Also, we wanted to know more about the time Damien was moved from Simpson General Hospital to UMMC. They don’t post any further information outside of their press release and referred her case to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. Lee said she had heard from the NAACP and was working with the civil rights group to get further answers about her son’s death.
