Robin Weigert, a native of Washington DC, attended Brandeis University and later earned an MFA in the acting program from NYU Tisch School of Arts.

From 1998 she enjoyed parallel success in both film and television until selected for something of a breakout role 2004. She captured audiences with her astounding portrayal of Calamity Jane in the historical HBO series, Deadwood. This depiction of the western frontier celebrity is considered the most accurate, and Weigert went for it with unparalleled gusto. She was nominated for an Emmy twice for her work in this piece.

Concurrently, she was also singled out for praise as lead in the quasi-autobiographical drama, Concussion. Most recently she played Dr. Amanda Reisman in Big Little Lies, and was again nominated for an Emmy with her fellow performers in the Ensemble category.

Perhaps more important is her triumph in a diversity of roles. The characters she portrayed in the TV series American Horror Story over nine years are good examples, from the anxious, fretful mother Cynthia Potter in AHS: Asylum, to the cannibal clan matriarch Mama Polk in AHS: Roanoke, and lastly the rock-ribbed yankee Martha Edwards in AHS: Winter Kills. So deep are the portrayals of her characters, it takes some effort to realize that the same performer plays them all.

Ms. Weigert joins an impressive team of performers. This includes fellow American Horror Story veteran Billy Porter (Cinderella, Pose), Luke Evans (Crisis, The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of Five Armies), Alfredo Narciso (The Summer I Turned Pretty, Manifest), Francis Jue (Rendezvous , Manifesto), and Ramsey Faragallah (Bull, Madam Secretary).

Bill Oliver is directing Our Son. He has teamed up with Peter Nickowitz, with whom he shares writing credit. They had worked together on Jonathan and the Debutantes.

With respect to the plot of Our Son, nothing more is hinted at past the logline. Given the relatively spare cast, the focus steers toward more of a close-up, introspective exploration of the divorce/custody theme, rather than a bird’s-eye view, epic courtroom drama such as Kramer vs. Kramer. If so, this could be a fascinating, subtler take on the impact of families in crisis.

As the singular female in the cast (so far), it’s almost certain that Ms. Weigert plays Pam, the wife and mother of the ‘Son.’ She will no doubt bring the same depth to this character as she has others in the past. Luke Evans as the husband/father is a fair bet, having more than proven himself as upstanding father Bard the Bowman in the Lord of the Rings prequel. The casting choice for the child caught in the crossfire evidently has yet to be made.
