Police report say suspect is in custody

WELLS, Maine — Police responded Saturday afternoon to a shooting involving a family in Wells.

Wells Police Capt. Gerald Congdon said the alleged shooter is currently being detained at the Wells Police Department and “there is no threat to the general public.” York Hospital in Wells reported treating two adults and one young child for gunshot wounds.

“This was an isolated incident,” police stated in a press release.

Police did not state where the shooting took place or how many people were injured. Police stated those injured have been transported to area hospitals.

York Hospital released a statement Saturday night stating they treated the victims of the shooting.

“At 4:24 pm this afternoon, two adult males and one young child arrived at York Hospital in Wells, victims of gunshot wounds,” the statement read. “The two males were assessed to have non-life threatening injuries. Both were treated by Wells EMS and transferred to other area hospitals. The young child presented in critical/extremis condition. All appropriate treatment and resuscitation efforts were made by the York Hospital in Wells Care team led by an ED physician, and then the child was transferred via LifeFlight of Maine to Maine Medical Center in Portland.”

York Hospital in Wells was closed during the incident, and will re-open at 8 am tomorrow morning, Sunday, May 22.

The State Police Major Crimes Unit is at the scene of the shooting and is assisting in the investigation, according to police.

Police said there will be a further update released later.
