A retired San Luis Obispo County sheriff was arrested Wednesday on multiple charges of child sexual abuse, according to a sheriff’s spokesman.

Detectives arrested 63-year-old James Peter Storton of Arroyo Grande on an arrest warrant at an undisclosed location in town around 1:00 p.m. after filing their investigation with prosecutors. He was sent to the county detention center shortly after 4:30 p.m.

Cipolla said the site of arrest was being withheld to protect the victims and their families.

Fees, according to accounting records, include eight lewd and lascivious counts with a child, one lewd and lascivious count with a child aged 14 or 15, and eight unlisted charges.

Storton was hired by the Sheriff’s Department in 1980 and retired in 2009, according to Cipolla.
