The Justice Department, which launches the program, said 70 percent of couples using the service have settled their disputes out of court.

Court Secretary Lord Wolfson QC said, “Mediation is often a faster, cheaper, and less stressful way of resolving disputes that helps separate couples without going through unnecessary and often violent legal proceedings to reach amicable agreements.

“Our new system will bring the benefits of these services to even more families – it will save them the stress of lengthy litigation while helping to ease the pressure on our family courts as we recover from the pandemic.”

The ministers are raising £ 1 million to give the vouchers to 2,000 families and help them with placement costs.

They hope the system will help ease pressure on England’s creaky family courts, which have a massive backlog of cases due to Covid lockdowns.

As part of the program, couples will discuss their problems with a trained mediator who will help them get a custody agreement rather than leaving it to a judge.
