State Rep. Tan Parker, R-Flower Mound, said the recent legislature brought some successes but also many challenges.

“We did a lot of good things during our meeting,” Parker told a crowd of about 150 people on June 15 at a Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce lunch. “We had a lot of challenges with the COVID[-19] dynamic, and it has put a massive strain on our financial budget. “

Parker said Texas lawmakers passed a $ 248 billion budget to combat the economic decline that the pandemic brought about. He added that Texas was among the first states to recover from the downturn.

Parker represents House District 63, which encompasses southwest Denton County.

He also discussed some of the bills he had passed during the session over lunch. This included a draft law on prison reform to support the reintegration of nonviolent prisoners; a law banning nations like China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia from interfering in the state’s technological trade; and a law that allows Reformed parents to regain custody of their children after two years of rehabilitation.

Parker ended lunch with a question-and-answer session. He said the House of Representatives will meet again in September to discuss issues such as redistribution based on the 10-year census data, which will arrive on September 15.

“It is the greatest honor and privilege of my life to represent Denton County,” said Parker. “I am honored to be out there fighting on behalf of our citizens.”
