The statistics on the prevalence of substance abuse and addiction in our society are alarming. The most recent National Substance Abuse Summary provides statistical data on substance abuse treatment in New Jersey for the 2019 calendar year. In 2019, 98,628 documented treatment admissions and 96,482 documented layoffs were reported to the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Mental Health, and Addiction Services by Substance Abuse Treatment Providers. Of these reported cases, about 30% were treatment for alcoholism and about 48% were treatment for heroin addiction or some other form of opiate addiction. Cocaine addiction and marijuana addiction made up an additional 15%. Notably, 6% of those seeking treatment had DCP&P and / or family court cases pending.
