ROCKFORD, IL. – A gunman opened fire at an Illinois bowling center, killing three people and injuring three other people on Saturday night in what authorities believed was an accidental attack.

A 37-year-old male suspect was in custody after the shooting at Don Carter Lanes, police said on a social media post.

Two of those who were shot were teenagers, Police Chief Dan O’Shea said during a press conference.

O’Shea did not immediately release additional information about the victims. Describing the scene as included, he said he did not believe any officers fired their guns while arresting the suspected shooter.

Rockford is about 75 miles south of Madison.

Mayor Tom McNamara released a statement saying he was “upset and sad” about the shooting.

“My thoughts go with the families of those who have lost loved ones,” said McNamara. “I also think of the injured and hope for a quick and full recovery.”

The Rockford Register Star reported that 2020 was the city’s deadliest year for murders, according to records dating back to 1965. That year, 35 people were killed in the city, breaking the previous record of 31 in 1996.
