Virginia teen pays it ahead after her dad makes final youngster assist fee with 80,000 pennies
A Virginia teenager was surprised when her father, whom she hadn’t seen in years, made his final maintenance payment of 80,000 pfennigs.
Avery Sanford, 18, said she was in the middle of her class when he stopped in a trailer and tossed the pennies on the street in front of her house.
“My mom went outside while it was happening,” Sanford told WTVR earlier this week. “She didn’t recognize them at first. And she asked, ‘What are you pouring on my lawn?’ And he said, ‘This is your last child support.’ And then she realized who it was. “
But when Sanford and her mother finished collecting the pennies, they decided to turn the bad situation into a positive one by donating every penny to Safe Harbor, a domestic violence shelter.
“If you turn around and donate this money to mothers and children in need, the situation becomes really positive. There is a lesson to be learned from this, ”she said.

Learning a lesson of her own, Sanford said the incident showed her that she had made the right but tough decision to stay away from her father, adding that she did not want a relationship with someone who does not respect her mother.
“It is really hurtful and harmful to your children when you do such things,” she said. “And it doesn’t matter how old your children are. It doesn’t matter whether you are a young child or an adult. Your parents’ actions will always have some effect on you. “
