Mic Mess, real name Michael Mess, started hip hop at the age of 15 after a series of life-changing events inspired him to write music. His aunt, who was eight months pregnant, for example, was sadly shot when she got into her vehicle after work. The baby died too.
To help him cope with this tragic event, Mess began hosting music events, posting projects, and teaming up with other artists and DJs. Mess had a child at the age of 17 causing custody and livelihood battles and struggled to gain the notoriety he longed for. At the same time, these challenges offered a relentless approach to life and vowed never to give up on one’s dreams.
Mess had his second child at the age of 29, and this was the moment that drastically changed his life. He understood that it was time to put his dream aside and focus on building his foundation for his children and positioning himself to invest in his career, unless you are lucky enough to have it to create in the music industry.
“I took a job at a company where I had to bring my personal vehicle to Dallas and train for 45 days,” says Mess. “I didn’t have a vehicle at the time, so I borrowed a car from my brother-in-law and set off for Texas. It was a tough decision because I missed my son’s first birthday, but I was determined to make sure the sacrifice paid off. “
And that was certainly the case for Mess. A year later, Mess opened his own company and saw his business take off quickly and make him big bucks. However, the successes he had had consequences.
“As one of my favorite artists, Nortorious BIG, said, ‘Mo Money, Mo Problems,’ I learned that making money doesn’t solve problems – it shows who you really are or highlights the problems you’ve had tenfold,” explained Mess. “Instead of investing my newfound wealth in my art, I was faced with many demons – an opioid addiction amid a national epidemic and a gambling addiction that weighed heavily on my personal life.”
Despite these devastating battles, Mess found light in each of them and is now the proud husband and father of five children. In 2014, his wife gave birth to a number of twins in a very complicated pregnancy, and in 2018, his wife gave birth to their youngest child.
At 38, Mess is more determined than ever to make his dream come true and tell his story. With over 70 songs recorded over the years, Mess has always viewed hip hop as therapy. As a calm kid who would keep his feelings and thoughts to himself, hip hop became a way to deal with some of the struggles life threw on him.
