West Virginia police officer’s loss of life results in three extra arrests: report

Three other suspects were arrested in connection with the Charleston, W.Va. death on Saturday, police officer Cassie Johnson said on Saturday.

All three new suspects are charged with conspiracy, reported WOWK-TV of Huntington, W.Va. The people were in the residence where the prime suspect, Joshua Phillips, allegedly bought drugs.

The three other suspects were identified as Richard Chapman, 44; Herbert Sharpe, 44; and Marshall Sharpe, 24. The two Sharpes are an uncle and a nephew, Kanawha County Sheriff Michael Rutherford said at a news conference.

Officer Johnson, 28, responded to the location after a neighbor complained about a problem with vehicle parking. Shortly after their arrival, Phillips is said to have shot and killed the policeman, who sustained severe wounds and, according to police, died in a hospital two days later after being released from life support.

Charleston, W.Va., Police officer Cassie Johnson died Thursday after being shot dead in a confrontation with a suspect Tuesday.

Phillips was later shot dead at close range by other officers arriving at the scene, WOWK reported. He was hospitalized for treatment for his wounds, authorities said.

Meanwhile, Officer Johnson’s remains were brought to the Kanawha County Medical Examiner’s office after an organ donation, the station reported.

A memorial service and funeral for the officer are scheduled for next Tuesday at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center, according to the Charleston Police Department.
