Wyden And Thune Get Tribal Youngster Help Invoice Handed Out Of Senate

Tribes running child benefit agencies could soon get help collecting overdue child benefits. KLCC has the latest on bill sponsored by Oregon Democratic Senator Ron Wyden and South Dakota Republican John Thune.

KLCC’s Brian Bull reports on a bill sponsored by Oregon Democratic Senator Ron Wyden and South Dakota Republican John Thune to enable tribes to claim overdue child support.

The US Senate has just passed law giving 60 Indian tribes with childcare facilities access to the Federal Tax Refund Offset Program to collect overdue money.

Senator Wyden says state agencies are already doing this.

“Legislation empowers tribal authorities with the same tools as states to ensure that unconscious parents perform their maintenance obligations. This is about fairness for our tribes. ”

The program allows the US Treasury Department to withhold a tax refund from a non-custodial parent who owes overdue child support and remit them to the Child Benefit Authority for distribution to the family.

In Oregon, the Klamath Tribes and the Confederate Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation have their own childcare facilities.
