ASHEBORO – A mother and her 8-month-old child were reunited after a man stole a vehicle with the child on Monday morning and led authorities on a lengthy chase, police said in a press release.

James Allen Harris, 32, has been charged with hijacking and theft of a vehicle.

The officers responded to Harbor Freight Tools on East Dixie Drive in Asheboro and spoke to a mother who told police she parked her vehicle in front of the store to pick up an item she had ordered. The mother let the vehicle run and, according to the police, unlocked it with her child.

While the mother was in the store, a man got into the vehicle and drove away, police said.

With the help of a mobile operator, the authorities accessed location information from a phone left in the vehicle. The vehicle left the Asheboro city limits and caused the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office to answer the last location the cell phone was known to be known to.

MPs found the vehicle and tried to stop it, but the driver refused, resulting in pursuit through areas south and west of Asheboro, police said.

The chase ended on Old Lexington Road near Chamberlin Drive in Asheboro, where Harris was arrested and authorities located the child unharmed in the vehicle, police said.
